Dental Inlays and Onlays

Dental Inlays and Onlays in Chino

Modern dental techniques allow us to repair almost any damage or decay that affects your teeth. Two options that have continued to prove useful through the years are dental inlays and onlays at our Chino office. Along with fillings and bonding, these two dental procedures are popular for treating teeth affected by cavities and decay.
At Chino Aesthetic Dental, Dr. Joshi carefully evaluates every patient’s situation to see whether dental inlays or onlays are the right choices for them. She works closely with you to find the best solution for improving and sustaining your oral health.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are quite similar, and they both serve the same purpose of restoring and protecting teeth that have been damaged by decay. The main difference between the two is the amount of tooth that the treatment covers. The secret is in the names of the two versions of this procedure: inlays are fully in the tooth, and onlays are in the tooth and on the tooth.
Both inlays and onlays are made of tooth-colored material that fills missing parts of your tooth. Once we have cleaned out and decay or cavities, we can apply the right amount of material to your tooth, both restoring it and protecting it at once. In some cases, patients even replace previous fillings with inlays or onlays to provide extra stability to their tooth.

Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays

Stability

When bonded to your tooth, both inlays and onlays can provide additional structural integrity to weakened teeth. Where fillings can decrease a tooth’s strength, this procedure can actually strengthen your teeth.

Natural Look

We provide restoration that color matches your natural teeth, so your inlays and onlays should blend into the rest of your smile.

Durability

They are far more durable than fillings and have impressive longevity when properly cared for.

Better Aesthetic

Inlays and onlays allow us to achieve better contours for the repaired tooth, improving the function, feel, and appearance of the tooth.

Are Inlays or Onlays Right for Me?

If you have molars or premolars that are damaged or affected by decay, then inlays or onlays may be right for you. When you come in for your appointment, we can get started on finding the right restoration method for your situation. From fillings to onlays to crowns, we provide a full range of methods to get your teeth into better shape.
The right procedure for you depends on the teeth you want to treat and the extent of damage to the tooth. Inlays and onlays are excellent for mild to medium cases where teeth are significantly weakened or have larger cavities. Many patients choose them as a way to replace fillings or support teeth weakened by additional decay.
Dr. Joshi carefully examines your situation and can build a plan that will result in stronger, healthier teeth. At every step, she provides you with complete information so you will never be in the dark about any part of your dental treatment.

What Is the Process Like?

Most patients can have their teeth restored with inlays or onlays after only two separate visits to our office. One significant difference between fillings and this treatment is that we fabricate every inlay or onlay in a laboratory. This ensures that each procedure matches your natural teeth and restores them with greater accuracy.
During your first visit, we either remove your damaged filling or treat the decay affecting your tooth. We then proceed to prepare the tooth for receiving either an inlay or an onlay. Once ready, we take an impression of your teeth to ensure your custom-made inlay or onlay perfectly matches your target tooth. This impression is sent to our laboratory, where they will fashion your inlay or onlay within a week or two. In the meantime, your tooth will be protected with a temporary sealant.
Once your inlay or onlay is ready, you can come in for the second visit. During this one, we carefully apply the inlay or only to the target tooth (or teeth!) and bond it to them. This bonding process is key as it increases the overall stability of your treated teeth. After that, you can return to your day and enjoy your repaired tooth!
When cared for properly, inlays and onlays from Chino Aesthetic Dental can last anywhere from 10-30 years. With a healthy oral hygiene routine, you can enjoy their benefits for decades to come.
