What Are Dentures?

Dentures are a prosthetic device that replaces multiple missing teeth all at once. While dental implants and bridges are excellent options for patients missing a few teeth, dentures are great for patients missing most if not all of their teeth in their upper or bottom jaw (or both!).
Modern dentures look and feel more natural than those of the past. With the right set of dentures, your smile will not only be complete, but you will be able to eat and speak with ease.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Comfort and Function

Modern dentures are made to be comfortable throughout the day.

Eat and Speak With Ease

Missing teeth not only make eating more difficult, but they can impact how you speak. Dentures take care of both of these concerns.

Facial Support

Facial muscles can sag when you are missing a significant amount of teeth. With dentures, you can prevent your facial shape from changing and beginning to sag.

Easy to Clean

You can take out your dentures to clean them each day, which makes cleaning them easier than even cleaning natural teeth.

Are Dentures Right for Me?

Choosing the right teeth replacement option depends on the number and position of your remaining teeth. If you are missing many teeth, especially in a row, then dentures might be a viable option. Likewise, for patients missing entire rows of teeth, dentures could be the solution you need. For patients missing only a single tooth or a couple of teeth, dental implants or bridges might be the right choice.
When you come in for your appointment, Dr. Joshi can examine your mouth and help you find the right option for you. If you are missing teeth, the sooner you look into replacement options, the better off your mouth will be. Missing teeth can result in a range of negative effects, including significant changes to the shape of your face or loss of jawbone mass. When you come in, we will work on getting you a set of replacement teeth as soon as possible. That way, you can get back to enjoying your smile and the conveniences that come with a full set of teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

An increasingly popular option for patients who need dentures is to try implant-supported dentures. This style of dentures provides exceptional stability, as the dentures are made to hook onto dental implants placed in the gums. Implant-supported dentures provide a range of extra benefits, including protecting your gum and jawbone health more than traditional dentures. But, like regular dentures, they are still removable and highly convenient. Ask Dr. Joshi if this option might be right for you.

What Is It Like Getting and Having Dentures?

Since every set of dentures is made to match your jaw, there is a multi-step process. First, we examine your remaining teeth and jaw. If dentures are right for you, we take impressions and measurements to use in making your customized set of dentures. If you are having implant-supported dentures, we will first need to install the implants for the dentures to be attached to.
Once you first get your dentures, there may be an adjusting period. Eating or speaking might feel a little funny during this time, but you should quickly adapt to your new set of teeth. Soon, you will be back to life with a full set of teeth that allow you to eat, drink, and speak just like you used to.
While dentures cannot get cavities like regular teeth, it is still important to keep them clean. Fortunately, cleaning dentures is extremely easy and quickly can become a part of your daily hygiene routine.
If you have any questions about your dentures, we will gladly answer them. Give us a call and we will provide you with any additional information or tips you might need.
