What Are Crowns?

Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-shaped caps that can be placed on top of damaged teeth. Not only do crowns protect the tooth from further damage, but they also restore the tooth’s shape and give it a complete appearance. Both tooth decay and accidents can result in significantly damaged teeth, which can prove both a health and cosmetic concern if severe enough.
Depending on the tooth and your situation, the crown could be made of either metal, resin, porcelain, or ceramics. Each material comes with its own benefits, and Dr. Joshi can help you decide on the material that best suits your goals.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Protection

By covering up the damaged tooth, you can prevent additional damage to it.

Restoration

A damaged tooth can stand out in your smile, while crowns restore it to how it looks and feels. You not only can look better, but you also can resume your normal diet without restrictions placed on you by damaged teeth.

Avoid Extraction

Other teeth replacement options like dental implants might require removing a damaged tooth first. Crowns allow for a more straightforward process to avoid tooth extraction.

Easy to Care For

Dental crowns are as easy to care for as your natural teeth. While they cannot get cavities themselves, regular cleaning and care are still important to prevent damage or dislodging the crown.

Are Crowns Right for Me?

If you have a damaged tooth, you could be a great candidate for dental crowns. This procedure is one of the most adaptable ways to restore your smile. From materials to the size of the crown, you can make adjustments to suit your individual situation perfectly.
When you come in for your appointment, Dr. Joshi can exam your teeth and help you decide if crowns are right for you. She will walk you through all your options for repairing or replacing your teeth so you can decide with confidence on your treatment.

Types of Crowns

  • Metal: Crowns can be made from several types of metals. While they can stand out, they are excellent for repairing molars or less visible teeth. Metal-based crowns can last the longest and hold up well to biting and chewing all kinds of food.
  • Porcelain: When made from porcelain, your tooth replacement can perfectly match the natural color of your teeth. Porcelain crowns can be either full porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. They are excellent for teeth in both the front and back of your mouth.
  • Resin: Resin crowns are often the most affordable option.
  • Ceramic: Ceramic crowns are great for patients with metal allergies or who want the best color-matching for their teeth. They are one of the most popular options for repairing front and visible
  • teeth.

What Is the Process of Getting Crowns Like?

Getting dental crowns usually happens over two different visits to our office. During your first visit, we can examine your teeth and take a series of x-rays. For patients who currently have damage to the pulp or an infected tooth, you will first need a root canal to ensure the infection does not spread or worse.
We then prepare the tooth, removing the damaged portions and shaping it to a size that will fit perfectly in the crown. This consists of precisely filing down the tooth, which we do carefully to ensure your comfort throughout the process. At this first visit, we also take impressions of your teeth to use in custom-fabricating your unique dental crown in the laboratory.
Once your crown has been made, you can come in for your second visit, during which we place the crown. We check for a snug and perfect fit to ensure the crown is both comfortable and fully protects the natural tooth underneath it.
If you can any questions or concerns during or after your crowns procedure, do not hesitate to let us know. We are by our patients’ sides at every step in the process and will gladly provide any information or answers you need.
