When Do You Need an Emergency Dentist?

You might be surprised at what is considered a dental emergency. Our dental emergency service encompasses more than merely trauma or injuries. We provide emergency dental care for

  • Severe Toothache: Significant tooth pain might be a sign of infection. You might need an emergency root canal.
  • Damaged Dental Materials: Lost a filling, a crown, or dentures? Timely replacement can keep bacteria out of the inner tooth.
  • Gum Issues: Swollen, bleeding, or discolored gums could require rapid treatment. Especially if your teeth feel loose in them.
  • Sudden Damage: Fractured or broken teeth could need same-day treatment to prevent infection.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Under the right circumstances, we can even put a knocked-out tooth back in!

Top Emergency Dental Services

  • Root Canal: Save an infected tooth or prevent bacteria from entering the vulnerable inner part of the tooth. Leaving your tooth untreated can put you at risk of the infection spreading. Or, the tooth could even die. Save a tooth with a same-day root canal.
  • Extraction: Remove a tooth that is putting your overall health at risk. Many extractions prove simple affairs that take only a matter of minutes.
  • Material Repairs: Restore a lost or broken filling, crown, or other dental material. These issues might not seem so bad at the moment. However, losing a filling or crown can expose your tooth to bacteria, which increases the risk of infection.
Appliance Repairs: Fix broken dentures or damaged braces. Trying to chew or speak with damaged appliances can put your teeth and gums at risk.

FAQs

Does insurance cover emergency dental care?

Dental emergencies often relate specifically to patient well-being. Thus, most dental insurance plans do cover at least part of treatment for dental emergencies. We gladly accept all PPO plans and Dentical/Medi-Cal insurance.

Should I go to the emergency room or an emergency dentist?

Anything related to the teeth and gums will fall under a dentist’s specialty. However, injuries to the jaw itself require a visit to the emergency department (ED) of your nearest hospital. If you think you have a dental emergency, you can start by calling our office. We can walk you through the next steps.

How can I prevent dental emergencies?

The good news is that you can take some steps to minimize your risk. The best way to mitigate risk is to wear a sports guard. This special mouth guard protects your teeth when playing sports such as football or basketball.

The bad news is there is no guarantee of avoiding an emergency. So, we recommend saving your nearest emergency dentist’s phone number. Have it ready for a quick call when the unexpected happens.

What to do about a knocked-out tooth?

Only hold the tooth by the crown (the part you normally see above your gums). If you hold it by the roots, those could break. Start by carefully rinsing the tooth with water. Then, gently try to reposition the tooth in the empty socket. If you have any trouble with this, simply keep the tooth in some milk (or keep it moist). Call to let us know you are coming, and bring that tooth with you to our office.

Is an emergency dentist available 24/7?

Not all emergency dentists will have 24/7 availability. However, we provide expanded hours in situations when waiting simply isn’t an option. We make every effort to ensure you can see us with a same-day appointment for any dental emergencies. Call us, schedule an appointment, and experience world-class care.
